Welcome Message From Our Program Director

Dear Obstetrics and Gynecology Applicant,
Thank you for your inquiry about our residency program in Obstetrics and Gynecology. We have a fully accredited, four-year program based entirely at Aultman Hospital.
The first year consists of three months each of obstetrics and gynecology, two months of night float, and one month each of ultrasound/breast, gynecologic oncology/pathology, reproductive endocrinology, emergency department.
The second year consists of three months of gynecology, two months obstetrics/maternal-fetal medicine, and one month each of obstetrics, night float, medical elective, ultrasound/breast, gynecologic oncology/pathology, reproductive endocrinology, SICU.
The third year consists of three months of gynecology, two months each of obstetrics and night float, and one month each of obstetrics/maternal-fetal medicine, urogynecology, reproductive endocrinology, anesthesia/NICU, gynecologic oncology/pathology.
The chief resident year consists of three months each of obstetrics, gynecology, gynecologic oncology, two months of urogynecology, and one month of night float. While on these services, the chief resident is the chief of that service.
We have a busy program with approximately 2,700 births annually, many of which are classified as high risk. We have been designated by the State of Ohio as a Level III Perinatal Center. We also have approximately 1,200 major gynecology operations annually, and a busy resident clinic with more than 10,000 outpatient visits. Our residents get a great deal of operative experience because virtually all patients on the obstetrics and gynecology service are teaching patients, and our private attendings are quite willing to assign technical responsibility to the residents. Our active outpatient clinic is responsible for about 70 births per month plus a large volume of operative gynecology and is supervised by our teaching staff.
I am a Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialist and together with my partner we have a large volume referral practice from the region. We have Dr. Michael Krew as our Associate Program Director also Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialist and Dr. Jason Hoppe our Assistant Program Director and generalist. Dr. Melissa Vassas is our Ambulatory Director. There are three reproductive endocrinologists on staff. Our gynecology staff has both a special interest in the field and a high volume of them teaches pelvic reconstructive surgery. We have subspecialty faculty educators leading the curriculum in their respective areas.
In addition to our practical experience, we have an active didactic teaching program that includes daily teaching rounds and one half day is devoted entirely for educational activities. The resident attendance at extramural conferences are frequently enabled. Our emphasis throughout is on patient care and in preparing physicians for the private practice of obstetrics and gynecology. Our teaching staff comprises more than 40 board-certified or eligible obstetricians/gynecologists.
We are one of the major teaching affiliates of the Northeast Ohio Medical University which is located approximately 35 miles from Canton. It has no teaching hospital per se but uses community hospitals such as ours. We have clinical clerkship rotations all year and residents help with the teaching of those clerkships. Our residents and attendings are eligible for faculty appointment at the university.
For the past several years, we have filled our first year positions through the National Resident Matching Program with excellent candidate, and our residents are of high quality and offer considerable peer stimulation. The relatively small size of our program allows our residents to get to know each other well and to have a more personal relationship with the attending staff.
Canton is located in Stark County with a population of 250,000. Canton has virtually all the advantages of a big city either within Canton itself or within one hour's drive at the most. Adequate housing is available either for rent or purchase and costs are much less than in many other areas of the country. Visitors from other parts of the country are amazed at what is available in Northeast Ohio. Aultman Hospital is centrally located and is a progressive institution.
If you are interested in applying to our residency program, please apply using the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Upon receipt of your completed application through ERAS, we will evaluate it and if you appear to be a viable candidate, we will invite you to Canton for a personal interview. If you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact us.
Sincerely,
Prab Gill, M.D.
