Aultman Hospital/NEOMED
Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program

Aultman Hospital/NEOMED obstetrics and gynecology residency program is an ACGME accredited program, since 1946, four-year program with five categorical positions per year based at Aultman Hospital. Our program’s curriculum focuses on providing residents with clinical experiences and exposure to an entire depth of obstetrics and gynecology to practice in any setting, educational support, and research opportunities. Every patient admitted to our service is utilized as a teaching patient. Our Starting PGY-3 residents typically have met their ACGME minimum cases enabling them to assume leadership roles as an ACGME teaching assistant. From the first day of residency, PGY-1s will enjoy hands-on learning experiences as they work directly with the on staff medical specialists.
Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) is our affiliate medical school which is located approximately 30 miles from Aultman. It has no teaching hospital but uses community hospitals. We have M3 core clerkships all year and M4 electives August through December. Residents help with teaching both M3 and M4 students. Our residents are appointed as Clinical Instructors at NEOMED.
Attendings consists of 35 physicians. Subspecialists consist of 2 maternal fetal medicine, 4 reproductive endocrinology infertility, 1 gynecologic oncology, 1 female pelvic medicine reconstructive surgery and 1 surgery. The remaining members are practicing obstetricians and gynecologists who provide one-on-one teaching and coverage for labor and delivery, operating room and ambulatory clinics.
Our residency is busy with 2,746 deliveries last academic year, many of which are classified as high risk. We also had 1,370 major gynecology operations, and a busy resident clinic with 12,314 outpatient visits last academic year. Aultman Birth Center features 30 Labor, Delivery, Recovery, and Postpartum (LDRP) suites and 3 state-of-the-art, high-risk delivery suites. Our designation as the only Level III obstetrics site in our five-county service area means residents will gain experience in both normal and complicated deliveries. Akron Children’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, with 25 private rooms, is supported by an on-site staff of neonatologists.
In addition to our clinical experience, we have an active didactic program that includes daily teaching rounds, Wednesday journal club, and Friday mornings are dedicated to education. Residents are given five professional education days along with an educational allowance.
Sincerely,
Jason Hoppe, DO, MHPE
